An Interview with Alessandra Williams: The Artist Behind our Limited Edition Candle

To celebrate the launch, we sat down with Alessandra to step inside her practice...

Hey Alessandra! Please can you introduce yourself and tell us about your work as an artist?

Hi, I'm Alessandra Williams. I'm a textile designer and an artist. My work is more kind of focused within the realm of interiors and interior art. 

What drew you to collaborate with MIRROR WATER on this project?

I first heard about MIRROR WATER when I discovered The Journal! I really appreciate and align with the vision and ethos of the brand of finding time in your day for rituals and reflection. I think that links well to my practice, so it was quite an effortless merge.

How did you approach designing the limited edition Sun Through Trees candle vessel? How did you interpret the Sun Through Trees fragrance visually?

My process when I am making print and design is very much about abstracting references into more simplified motifs. I created a pick and mix of various different symbols and threw together a few combinations that I felt reflected the name of this candle, which is Sun Through Trees.

What do you hope people feel when they experience this candle in their space?

I think the design is a really gentle nod and reminder of the smell, and it's a nice way to engaging multiple senses at once - where you're smelling the candle, glimpsing at the design, and it's a nice trigger of that amazing feeling of Sun Through Trees - it's such a beautiful thing to reflect on.

How does working with your hands and creating physical art connect you to reflection and grounding?

There's that phrase, 'get out of your head and into your hands' - and honestly, I think we're doing that everyday all the time, but maybe not even consciously. When we're doing the washing up or washing our face in the morning, it's these simple things and daily rituals. So that as part of my practice is really rewarding. When I get to have those opportunities of creating art in that way, it's one of those moments where you get to be fully present because you're not thinking about what's next in the day, you're just focused on the moment.

What role do rituals - like lighting a candle - play in your own life?

I cannot sit down to do any kind of work, whether it's creative or admin, without tidying my space first. That just really calms me down and gets me in the zone. So that is a number one ritual for me! I love having a fragrance in the room, anything that makes you feel like you're having like a reset of the space I think is really nice. 

How do you hope people connect with this piece, both as a candle and as a work of art?

Well I love it when you have an object that's multifunctional and goes on to have its new little life that was different from its original intention. So I have a few candles that I've kept the vessels for, in fact when I'm specifically shopping for candles, I'll often choose ones that I know I want to keep the container and reuse them!
